Is it normal for the child to have cold hands and feet?

Parents are usually left in a conundrum or dilemma when their baby’s hands and feet are cold and there’s no fever. If he is not suffering from any disease or does not have any kind of discomfort, then it becomes more confusing for parents to identify the root cause behind this coldness of their feet and hands.

There have been many cases where it has been observed that the child’s hands and feet are cold but the body is at a normal temperature. One of the causes could be when your baby is suffering from fever or any other illness. But this can happen without any particular cause too and there’s no need to worry. So if you find your baby is not in any discomfort then it can be considered as normal.

After the birth of a baby, it is expected that they’ll have cold feet, the main reason being their development is still progressing. Newborns have colder feet as compared to the older kids mainly because their circulation system is still working and trying to keep up with the body’s demands. It’s still developing and adapting.

In the initial stages, the body focuses on keeping the vital organs at the right temperature hence there is a heat distribution in hands and feet, which is why they seem colder than any other part of the body. The blood supply is more to the vital organs rather than the feet and hands. It takes up about 3 months for your baby’s circulation to adapt completely to life outside the womb. As babies grow and become more active their circulation will improve and be better.

Sometimes chilling of your baby or overheating may also be signs of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). So parents should keep a watch for it. Children should be dressed appropriately according to the environment. They should be dressed properly and the nursery room’s temperature should be moderate and not too hot or cold.

You can try and keep your baby warm. Don’t leave them in their diaper instead dress them properly in baby clothes. Let them wear socks and gloves for proper heat distribution along the whole body. But don’t bundle him in a sweater or blanket if the temperature outside is normal.

How-to-Keep-Your-Baby-Warm

Don’t suffocate your child instead just add an extra layer just like you would do for yourself. If you are still sceptical then take their temperature and if it’s less than 97 degrees Fahrenheit then he may be feeling cold and you can add an extra layer of clothing just to keep him warm enough.

At times cold feet can be a sign of something serious going on inside your baby like meningitis in which the spinal cord and the brain of the baby become inflamed. If left untreated can prove to be fatal too. If your baby is suffering from fever along with irritation and inconsolable crying then it’s advisable to get him checked by a doctor.
