What are the strategies to help you feel better when you are overwhelmed as a new mom?

You finally have your little bundle of joy in your arms and no amount of happiness can come close to the feeling you have now. Congratulations! You are a mom! But this word seems quite new to you, right?

But again, there’s nothing that can prepare you completely to be a mom. There is no book describing how to become the perfect mother. It happens gradually as you learn from the experiences. Don’t let this feeling startle you!

Being a new mom can be quite overwhelming for you. It brings in a lot of changes. And it is okay to be overwhelmed too. There are a series of events simultaneously happening around you and it will take time to get fully adjusted to it. You might be experiencing a roller coaster of emotions, which you never had before.

Taking care of yourself

The first and foremost thing to remember is taking care of you. With your newborn in your arms, you might completely forget about looking after yourself, all your attention will be focused on your little one. Even the slightest discomfort of your baby might disturb you. Staying awake the whole night in case your little one cries or needs to be fed. Caught in between all of this you might forget or intentionally avoid taking care of yourself just to put your baby first.

stressed-mother

Take good care of yourself. Eat and sleep well. It is very important that you don’t neglect your health. Once you are fit, only then can you look after your baby and family. Take some time off and do the activities, which you like, go out once a while, read a book and listen to your favourite music.

Limit your visitors

Don’t hesitate in taking rest while there are visitors at your place. Make “yourself” your priority; everyone else can be dealt with later. You need time to recuperate from childbirth and adjust to the new changes in your life. It might look rude but it is better to avoid visitors for a while, as you need to focus on yourself and your baby. It’s okay to tell them that you are not ready.

Don’t hesitate in asking help

Don’t hesitate in asking help

Don’t hesitate in asking for help from your relatives and friends. In the initial days, you’ll feel more stressed and overwhelmed and you shouldn’t feel shy about calling them up for help. In fact, they will be more than happy to help you out. Apart from taking care of the baby they can help you out with the household chores and cooking too. It gives you some time to rest and relax.

Plan Ahead

When your due date is near start planning how things will go around when your baby will be around. Cook meals prior and store it in the fridge. You can also sign up for meal service or hire a cook if feasible. Try and simplify your routine and assign certain duties specifically for you and your partner. This will ease the work between you both.

Eat, exercise and sleep

Remember to eat a healthy and balanced diet and exercise regularly. Take rest and sleep whenever you get the opportunity to. The best time to sleep is when your baby is asleep or when someone else is looking after her. Go out and inhale the fresh air around you, carry your baby close to your chest and just embrace the feeling of love. Don’t do hard exercises instead keep it light.

Talk to your partner

It’s often seen that newborn moms tend to avoid their partners, which ends up in creating problems in their marriage. This is an added stress, which you don’t want to take. Talking to your partner about your feelings and emotions will help you feel better and lighter. It will improve your relationship with your partner and he might open up as well.

There will be a point where you’ll start questioning your parenting abilities and feel that you are not doing enough. But in reality, you just need to give yourself a break and relax. You are doing everything you can and it’ll just take time for you to accept it. Just hold your baby close and all your stress and tension will vanish away.
