Congratulations! Your little one is finally home. You might be filled with extreme euphoria and joy. Holding your newborn and welcoming him to his home for the first time is a new feeling of joy, which you cannot explain. Just like you, your baby might be overwhelmed by the change of surroundings.

Everything must be new for him! If you are a new parent, then it’s a new experience for you too. The weeks, months and years, which will follow will be a new ride. The initial years of your baby’s life lay down the foundation for the future.

The day you finally get to see your baby, it’s the beginning of a new chapter of your life. Within the first hour of birth, it’s essential to establish skin-to-skin contact with your baby. It gives your baby a feeling of security and calms your anxiety too.

Bonding can take a few weeks, but that first skin-to-skin contact is filled with a rush of joy, love, and warmth. It is encouraged to breastfeed in the first hour too. It develops an attachment with your baby.

(0-2) Weeks Of Development

Arriving home with your baby, for the first time can be overwhelming as well as filled with excitement. It’s the first step towards the start of a new chapter.

Week 1The first week will be quite uneventful but will be filled with lots of hugs and kisses, as you won’t be able to get enough of your little one. Initially, your baby will sleep for most of the day. They sleep for about 16 hours a day.

Babies tend to feed a little amount but at a higher frequency. They have to be fed every 2-3 hours.  You’ll have to change their diapers more frequently. Waking up in the middle of the night is very common.

In the first week, it is very normal if your baby is crunched up and doesn’t move his legs or arms much. He was in a womb for a very long time and it will take time to gain full control over his arms and legs.

Your baby still has his umbilical stump and special care has to be taken of it. It needs to be kept dry and clean at all times. You can fold up the front part of the diaper to avoid getting in contact with the stump.

You need to keep the stump as well as the area around it dry, clean and in contact of air. You can clean around it with a wet cloth to remove the dirt.

Babies needn’t be bathed often. As their umbilical stump is still there, it is preferable to give your baby a sponge bath instead of a tub bath. But remember to be gentle with his eyes, nose, nails, and fingers. Clean their diaper area thoroughly to prevent infections and body rash.

Refrain from using any soap. While washing your little ones’ clothes use a mild detergent to prevent any rash or allergies.

Your baby might lose a little weight. By the end of the first week, your baby will be able to distinguish between sounds and noises and follow your voice.

Week 2

You have completed 1 week with your baby! You are finally getting a groove of it. If your baby is crying more than usual then it might be, because of colic. Usually, it goes away within the first three months. You can just try and calm her down or even consult your doctor.

Your baby’s second week is pretty much similar to that of the first week. He’ll be sleeping as usual. He’ll be more alert and might get startled on different noises. By this time he’ll be able to recognize between your voice and a stranger’s voice. Try and have some tummy time with her as your baby spends most of its time on his back, it’ll help in his movements.

By now your baby can move his legs and arms smoothly than the first week. Your baby’s vision has also improved significantly than in the first week. She’ll be able to recognize different patterns and objects.

Remember to burp them after their feeding or before putting them to bed to release the air trapped within. As long as your baby is feeding properly and you are disposing of many diapers, you don’t have to worry if your child is feeding properly or not. The umbilical stump might still be present so take extra care of it.

Tips:

• Jaundice is pretty common in a newborn. Keep a watch for pale-yellowish skin color and contact the doctor immediately.

• Ensure that you take proper care of the umbilical stump and keep it dry and clean. Do not get it wet or touch it frequently.

• Skin-to-skin contact is very important to build trust and establish a relationship between you two. Make sure you spend sufficient time with your baby. You can play with her or talk to her to keep her engaged.

• While carrying always support her head by placing your hand or arm behind her neck and spine.

• Swaddling your baby can prove to be calming and comforting for your baby. Use a soft blanket to swaddle her, but do not try to restrict them in it.

• Don’t forget to go for a check-up, after the completion of two weeks.

• Make sure you mention everything to your pediatrician and ask for advice if you need any.

Take lots and lots of rest. As a new parent, it can be very stressful and exhausting for you. Ask your partner to help you out. You can always seek help from your friends and family. And remember to capture all of these moments!
