Why do babies cry? What could be the reason for the baby to cry?

No babies are alike, but the one thing which they have in common is the tendency to cry. A newborn baby cannot communicate with you through words instead they try and let you know about what they like, dislike or what they want by shedding a few tears.

By the act of crying, they try to grab your attention and indicate if they are hungry, sleepy or fatigued. For a new parent, it is tough to comprehend as to why their baby is crying and sometimes they panic and question their parenting skills. But crying is very natural and that is how babies express their needs.

Babies cry for many reasons and it is how they communicate. Initially, it takes time to understand their tears, but gradually everything falls into place and we have a better understanding of why they are crying. As we listen and pay attention to them, we’ll be providing them with their specific needs. There might be many reasons behind the wailing of a newborn.

Hunger

Hunger is one of the most basic reasons why a baby will cry.  Anyone gets cranky if they do not eat for a long time. Same is the case with babies, but babies might also cry even if their last feed wasn’t that long ago especially the newborn ones. The best way to calm her down would be by feeding until he is content.

Sleepiness or Fatigued

Babies find it hard to sleep sometimes when they are tired. The constant visit from visitors, rocking the baby too much is sometimes overbearing for the child too. They get overstimulated with much noise and activity and they cry. All your baby needs is a silent room to sleep after she has been fed.

Nappy change

A wet or dirty diaper may cause unnecessary irritation or rash and your baby might experience discomfort. Their tender skin gets affected more easily and irritates. A change of diaper within every few hours will relieve your baby from discomfort.

Cuddle

Sometimes all your baby needs is to be held and soothed and will cry inconsolably until you hold them and rock them or even sing to them. Babies often cry because of loneliness and this is a cry for attention and they just need your care and warmth.

Illness

Babies might cry in a different tone, one which is more urgent and continuous when they are not feeling well. Check for her temperature and if she is vomiting or has diarrhea, then immediately call your doctor to relieve your baby from pain.

Overstimulation

When they have a lot of visitors or when they are taken to a public or private event, they immediately become the center of attention. Everyone wants to hold them, kiss them or hug them and the baby might get overwhelmed with all this sudden attention. She is overstimulated and hence she cries. All she needs is some peace at that time, to relax.

Colic

Colic is the term used for infants who cry inconsolably for no apparent reason for the first three months since their birth. It is termed as “ excessive crying”. The cause of this isn’t clear, but it can be very stressful both for the baby and the parent. But it is common in babies in the first 3-4 months of their birth. You can do many things to help put your baby out of misery. Giving a tummy massage, holding and soothing your baby, feeding them are among other things that one can do to console their baby.

Soothe your baby

When your baby is inconsolable, she needs her parent or caregiver the most. And you can try various ways to relax her.

• Most babies love to be held or gently stroked, rocked and swayed. They feel closer to their caregiver and they feel loved. It calms them down and brings them joy, peace, and comfort.

• Massaging your baby’s tummy or even arms and legs can help in digestion as well as comfort her. Your touch helps soothe her and she relaxes or fusses less. She might even flash you a smile or give you a small giggle.

• Taking them out in the open space for some fresh air is something all the babies enjoy. They get to see something new, a new environment apart from their home.

• Giving them toys to play with or engaging them in different playful activities helps distract them from other things. It helps them keep occupied and try something new and eventually the ailing and fussing reduces. Giving them their favorite toy fills them with happiness.

• A soothing bath also helps. They also tend to play with you when in the water and enjoy thoroughly.

A crying baby is not something to majorly worry about. It is also not about bad parenting. It is just their way of letting you know, that they are lonely or uncomfortable. All the babies cry and the extent of their wails varies from child to child. Crying is just a phase and will soon pass out and the crying will reduce.
