What are the causes of having a dark line or Linea Nigra on your belly during pregnancy?
You go through millions of bodily changes during pregnancy and one among them could be that dark line formed on your belly which runs straight from your belly button to the start of pubic hair.
This dark line is termed as Linea nigra, which is a Latin term used for “Blackline”. It is also called as the pregnancy line by few.
Linea Nigra is 6-12mm dark line evident during pregnancy. It is witnessed mostly during the second trimester. Although, it could run from the upper abdomen to the pubic bone also. This line occurs in every woman but is in an invisible colour called linea alba where alba means white in Latin.
During pregnancy, this line gets darker in colour and becomes noticeable. Referring to dark in colour does not mean its black, it actually is either light brown or dark brown. It is considered to be of no harm and leads to no complications. Its 1 cm in width and witnessed by 75% of the pregnant women.
Causes of Linea Nigra / Pregnancy Line :
This dark line on your belly is caused by the secretion made by the changing hormones. Our body experiences fluctuating hormones during pregnancy due to which it released an excess of melanin, which is a compound responsible for skin pigmentation. This extra pigmentation produces a line which runs from your belly to the pubic muscles.
This extra colour is also the reason why you notice your nipples to turn to a darker colour during pregnancy. It is common in women of every skin colour and more noticeable in women with a fair skin tone.
Some people with old belief says that you give rise to a pregnancy line only up to your navel, it is a baby girl, and if it runs past your belly button, up to your ribs, then it could be with a boy. But believe me, this is a myth and is not scientifically proven. Its common among mothers giving birth to a baby girl and fun fact is even men sometimes have a linea nigra. So it’s not a sign to determine the gender of your child
When does it fade away?
Now a lot of women have this question in their mind accompanies with a “how?” Linea nigra fades away automatically after a few months of childbirth. You do not have to worry about it, because your body again undergoes hormonal changes post-pregnancy.
Also, if you think of using certain cream or bleaching the area then it would not be a great idea as you would be breastfeeding. And if you choose to go natural then apply lemon onto it once in a couple of days to lighten its colour. Talk to your doctor or midwife before you decide to apply any lotion to it.
The best way to avoid Linea Nigra is to avoid sunlight. Keep your tummy covered up most of the time and use sunscreen lotion if you have to come to direct contact with sunlight.
Folic acid deficiency can lead to hyperpigmentation. Maintain a very healthy diet and eat lots of leafy vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. You may also apply fresh aloe vera juice on it. Remember to take prenatal vitamins in consultation with your doctor.
As its perfectly normal, there is nothing you have to worry about. Every woman has one. Flaunt it. And more importantly, concentrate on your new life because after a while, after your child is born, you will see it’s gone. Keep that stress away and enjoy your pregnancy and look forward to the arrival of your child.
