How can you bring about discipline in your child?

As a parent, one of the jobs is to teach your child to be well behaved. Patients, time and consistency can be the key to addressing behavior problems in your 3-5-year-old child. Not only this you also require a combination of arts and science.

Discipline is teaching your child how to behave and how not to behave. It works better when you have a warm and loving relationship with your child. Discipline does not always mean punishment they are positive. They are built on talking and listening.

Here are some tips to bring discipline in a preschooler:

Listen to them: Listening to your child is very important. Let your child complete telling the story, do not interrupt them. For instance, if your child is jealous, talk to him about it, instead of being judgemental.

Attention:Give them attention as much as you can. This is the most powerful tool in disciplining your child. This helps you to encourage good behavior and discourage bad behavior. Remember, your child needs most of your attention.

Encourage when they do good: Children need to know what they are doing, be it good or bad. Notice the good behavior in them and point it out, by praising his good deeds. Be specific enough like, “wow, you did a great job by keeping things at its place.

Ignore the bad behavior: Now when we say ignore the bad behavior, it does not apply every time. You should know when to respond and how to respond. As long as your child does no harm and gets plenty of attention for his good behavior, it will be an effective way of stopping it. Ignoring the bad behavior of your child can also help him to understand the natural consequences after that.
For instance, if your child keeps dropping her cookies, she will soon know that she will be left with no cookies later. At this moment the child will learn that it is her loss on dropping the cookies and will never do that again.

Plan ahead

Plan ahead:

Be prepared for the situations where a child may have trouble in behaving. Prepare them for upcoming activities as to how you want them to behave.

Tell and show:

Teach your child, what is right and what is wrong with calm words and actions. Model how you want your child to behave.

Set rules: Set clear and consistent rules your child can follow. Be sure that you explain these rules according to their age.

Give consequences: Slowly and calmly explain to your child as to what the consequences will be if he does not behave well. For instance, tell your child that if he does not behave well, you will not give him the toys for the rest of the day. But you may give it after a few minutes. Don’t take away those things which your child requires, such as food or water.

Divert them from their bad behavior: Usually, children misbehave when they have nothing to do or are bored. Find some other activity wherein your child attention gets diverted from it.

Reward them: If your child is struggling with their behavior, create a smiley chart. Tell them once they collect a specific amount of smiley’s, say 5 give them a chance to pick, what they want like giving choice in picking a movie they want to watch. This will help in their behavior to achieve their awards.

Talk about alternatives:

When your Child misbehaves, teach them the alternative way to respond to the situation. If your child throws her toy in anger, teach them other strategies to respond to such situations. Ask them as to what they would do in those situations. This will help them understand more about good behavior.

Child misbehavior

Parents should ensure that they completely understand their child behavior and ask questions or administrators for necessary advice. If you strongly feel that your child behavior should be changed, approach a teacher and express your concern and possible solution. Communication and involvement can ensure the best care for all the preschoolers.
