The word cancer is enough to send a shiver up anyone’s spine. No one likes to hear that a loved one has been diagnosed with this illness. Unfortunately, this disease attacks people of all ages – from kids to adults.
The mere thought of your child falling victim to it can be nerve-wrecking. Cancer can suck the life out of people. Parents whose kids have been diagnosed with it can have a million questions which only time will answer. However, there are measures you can take to decrease the risks.
Some of the most common types of cancer in children are leukaemia, brain and spinal cord tumours, lymphoma and bone cancer. They’re less likely to suffer from other types of cancer.
However, in very rare cases they can be diagnosed with cancers typically found in adults. Cancer is one of the major causes of death among children in the U.S. Predictions estimated that more than 10,000 kids would be diagnosed with cancer in 2018.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES?
The roots of cancer can be traced back to changes in the cell. Such changes in the genes can be severe and uncontrollable. Once your cell goes rogue, it can be spread to the rest of the body. The causes of cancer among children are pretty much unknown. When can your child be at risk? Exposures to radiations, infections and medical conditions serve as risk factors. Genetic factors seem to play a role too. Around 10% of children may be more sensitive to cancer due to genetic reasons.

CANCER CAUSING SNACKS
Sometimes you might be running late for work or too tired to get up, so you give your child a packet of pop tarts to keep them busy and happy. However, in the long run, this can not only be unhealthy but also damaging. Pop-tarts consist of high fructose corn syrup, dextrose and sugar. Another ingredient called TBHQ is derived from petroleum which can cause cellular dysfunction. Findings suggest that this ingredient is related to tumours.
Fruit snacks have become too popular these days. You might think that the fruity flavour makes it a healthier alternative, but you could be wrong. These snacks usually contain food colouring which is derived from petroleum. However, it is notable that most of the studies have been done on rats and it’s unclear if the same assumption can be applied to human beings.
Teddy grams are coated with the dreaded TBHQ. Chances are your child is obsessed with these; however, they can cause nausea, vomiting and delirium. Research suggests that they can damage the umbilical cells and human lung. They are also linked to ADHD in children
Everyone loves a packet of Cheetos. One look at this cheesy goodness and your child forgets all his worries. This might be handy at times but shouldn’t become a regular pattern. The artificial colour “yellow 6” in Cheetos originates from petroleum. Even though disheartening, eating Cheetos should be avoided.
Refined sugars such as high fructose corn syrup are the major causes of cancer. Refined sugars cause insulin spikes and help cancer cells multiply. Switching to organic honey or maple sugars can only help.
Research findings suggest that processed foods are linked to cancer. A ten percent rise in such foods indicates a corresponding ten percent increase in the risk of developing cancer. Processed foods are packed with sugar, low in fibre.
Hot dogs can be a family favourite snack but cooking it leads to alterations in the chemical structure of the meat. It also releases a carcinogen. It’s only going to benefit your child in the long run if you limit it in their diet.
Everyone is familiar with family movie nights featuring popcorn and chips. Microwaving popcorn is convenient and quick. The artificial butter flavouring releases fumes which are toxic to humans. Potato chips aren’t only high in fat but also contain huge amounts of sodium. Many people debate about this but it’s always better to go organic and make your own popcorn or chips.
If you’re one of the cautious ones then you can switch to vegetables, cereals (high in fibre) and citrus fruits. Mix them up and get creative so your kid doesn’t get tired easily. Whipping out a salad could do the trick. Take your kid grocery shopping to entice their curiosity and this can be a great learning experience for them as well.
Allowing them to choose between fruits, gives them a sense of control. There are healthier ways to satisfy your child’s sweet tooth! Children pick up their eating habits sometimes from their parents. Adopt healthy eating habits as well so he doesn’t feel singled out.
