How can you make travelling with your child comfortable?
Travelling itself is a hectic task. And travelling with your child for the first time can be pretty overwhelming. You are not in the comforts of your home. And you have no idea what can go wrong. So it’s better to be prepared for any unforeseen circumstances. And to be prepared, you have to plan. For a smooth trip, you need to plan accordingly and know what you are getting into.
1. Planning in advance: Don’t leave any task for the last minute. It’ll just add to your burden and increase your stress levels. Plan and keep everything ready and in order. Make a list of all the items that are required for the trip and keep them ready beforehand. Pack in advance and crosscheck all the items. Leaving any task until the last minute of your travel can be a daunting task.
2.Pack less: This is your first outing with your child and you’ll want to take everything as per his comfort. You’ll wish to take all his favorite toys and any other item, which helps in maintaining a routine.
Refrain from carrying extra luggage. You have to manage an active toddler and additional luggage increases your problems. Carry as little as possible and only the necessary items. There’s no routine to be followed while travelling, hence there is no point of carrying unnecessary luggage.
3.Medication: In case your child is on any medication consult your doctor before travelling and don’t forget to pack the medicines. Carry additional medicines for common infections such as flu, vomiting, stomach ache, etc.
4.Diapers and Wipes: Your child might not be potty-trained yet. Hence carry a sufficient number of diapers and wipes. Bring along more than you think will be required. Make sure that you carry extra clothes as they might make a mess.
5.Explain the trip: Your child has an inquisitive mind. They are travelling for the first time and leaving their comfort zone behind. Hence they’ll have many questions. It is better to explain the whole trip to them before leaving so that they don’t feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed with the change in the scenario.
6.Travelling on a plane: Air travelling can be very challenging with your child on- board. Pick out the flight schedule and flight seats before ensuring a smooth ride. You would prefer to book the flight according to your little one’s timings and be seated together as a family. Carry earplugs to block the excessive sound as it might cause discomfort and the child might start crying.
7.Carry a camera: Don’t forget to carry a camera. This is your first trip with your child and you would want to capture all the memories. Click as many pictures as possible to cherish them later on. You can also give the camera to your child and ask them to click anything they like. This increases their creativity.
As a parent, you’ll put your best efforts to not lose your child. But in case your baby gets lost somehow, you need to make sure that your child is equipped with all the necessary contact information. The contact information should contain:
- Phone No.
You can put up all the above information in the form of a note in their pocket, as your child might not be able to memorize your contact information properly.
9.Entertainment: A bored child is a cranky child. Keeping your child occupied is a tough task. The smallest of things fascinate children and grabbing their attention is very easy. Let them carry their favourite stuffed toy. It gives them a homely feeling.
You can also carry a good storybook with illustrations and read it to them or let them go through it. Pictures are easy to understand than words. You can also show them a movie or cartoon show for their entertainment.
10.Stroller v/s sling: To make your travel more feasible it’s advisable to carry a stroller or sling. But carrying a stroller everywhere you travel can be daunting. Depending on the place you are going to choose between a stroller and a sling. If the roads are not good and you have to walk a long distance then taking a stroller might not be useful. Sling is the best option to take as it is light to carry and keeps your child close.
11.Activities: Plan activities, which will keep you as well your child entertained. It’ll be a new learning experience for them. No matter which place you visit you’ll always find activities suited to your whole family. Try travelling via public transport. It’ll amuse them and will be a new travelling experience for them.
12.Expect the Unexpected:
Your planning might be excellent but not everything goes according to your plan. No matter how much you prepare something will surely go wrong. Hence be prepared to handle anything that comes in your way. Try and be flexible in your schedule.
Don’t forget that you were a child once! Put yourself in your little one’s shoes and be flexible with their schedule. Ensure that your trip is remembered as the most memorable and that your child enjoyed to the fullest.
