How would the language and cognitive development of a child of 18 months be?
Cognitive development refers to the thinking process of a person. Cognition is a very complex process and is essential to the overall development of an individual. Cognition primarily concerns the brain and dictates how a person interacts with his or her environment. Kids at these ages reply to yes or no questions very easily. These two are their favourite words. “Do you want to sleep?” A shake of the head accompanied by the word “No.” answers your question. Sometimes they may begin chanting this word. They also start understanding when they need a nappy change. They may simply touch their nappy or say the word verbally to bring it to your attention.
Because they’ve understood the very basics of interaction, you can go one step ahead by teaching them other things. For example: If they’re familiar with their body parts, it’ll be easier for them to tell you, where they got hurt. This is not only useful for you but also a great learning experience for them.
You can even buy your little one a doll and show the different body parts. Point towards the barbie’s nose and say the word “Nose.” Then touch your baby’s nose and repeat the same word. Wait for them to imitate you. This will also keep their minds occupied for some time.
The way your child reacts to their environment indicates their cognitive development. How does she react when people approach her? Is she passive? Does she reciprocate your affections? Normally, kids respond enthusiastically to display, affection. They even initiate a kiss and a hug. These signs indicate their understanding of their immediate family and how they feel about other human beings.
Children develop at different rates so some might have surpassed these steps at an early age while others will take more time.
