What are the best ways to encourage your baby’s brain development?
A child’s brain development takes place rapidly from his birth until he turns three. It is linked with all other areas of development and growth. The main arena of brain development is cognitive development, which talks about a child’s intellect and their thinking and learning skill-sets.
As a parent or a caregiver, you need to create a stable environment to stimulate your child’s brain development and provide him with a platform to grow and learn. Extend the learning process outside the four walls.
You can help out your little one by creating that environment and doing activities with him to encourage his brain development and growth.
Since your child’s early childhood inculcate a habit of reading different books in him. It will help them develop a love for books. You can start with illustrative books with lots of pictures to help them understand better. Slowly you can proceed with books with words and short sentences.
This helps in building their vocabulary. Books play a vital role in brain development. It helps jog their brain and think with a direction. While reading books they come up with different questions and try to find an answer to it.
Don’t bind your child into restrictions and limitations. Let them explore the interiors as well as the exteriors of the house. That is how they’ll get a taste of the practical and real world.
They’ll hear, smell, feel and touch new textures. They’ll learn about the structures of different things, whether they are hard or soft, cold or hot. But be careful and monitor them so that they don’t get in contact, which is dangerous or might harm them.
Talk to your child. Communicate with them as much as possible. Ask them questions like “what is he doing?”; “How is he?”; “How was his day?”. Let them know about your day as well and what you are doing. Explain them your actions and the reasons behind it. It helps build their vocabulary and get a grasp of the activities happening around them.
A major part of communicating with your little one is to question them about everything they do and find out their reasoning. It allows them to think and answer. You can also point out to objects and ask them what that object is? What colour is it? It’s a fun way to introduce your kid to new things.
Playing different indoor and outdoor games is a great way to induce learning. Learning through actions has always been more effective than words. Play, sing and dance with them. It fosters and develops their imagination and creativity. Use age-appropriate toys like building blocks and puzzles to increase their brain activity.
Good food filled with nutrition is the key to a healthy body and a healthy body nurtures the mind. A diet consisting of milk, fruit and vegetables provide the essential nutrients necessary for brain development.
It’s important that you give your child an open space to learn and be free. Let them learn on their own. Be it tying their shoelace, taking a bath, wearing their clothes, eat by themselves etc. Let them learn how to do it instead of you telling them repeatedly or doing it for them.
Focus on learning:
It’s natural for your child to make mistakes, that’s how they grow. What matter is that they learn and not the end result. Focus on their learning and not their achievements. Reward them if they did it right, if not then encourage and help them to try until they achieve it.
Focus on their strengths and interests:
Encourage them to pursue their interests and go ahead with what they like. When they engage in activities they like it becomes a fun experience for them. They learn as well as they enjoy. Encourage him to do activities or learn subjects that fascinate him. Focusing on their strengths and encouraging them will motivate them to try new things.
Praise your child’s efforts honestly and sincerely. Don’t belittle them instead of pushing them to try and achieve their goals. Focus on what they are learning more than what they are achieving.
